Top Ten Questions Asked By Campers

1. Will I make friends at camp?

Yes! You'll be living in a cabin with other kids your age. You'll take activities with other kids who share your interests. You'll meet lots of kids from all over the United States and the world. They will all be different, but they will share one common bond - Christian Science. At camp it is easy and natural to make friends, and the friends you make often become friends for life.

2. Will I have fun?

Ask any kid who's been to camp and he or she will tell you that camp is non-stop fun. You'll always have someone to play with and there will always be something to do.

3. How many activities can I take?

On regular activity days you will have 4 classes that meet every day. In these classes you will be able to learn and practice new skills. You’ll also have a chance to sample other activities during your free choice period. If you took a different activity during each free choice period you’d be able to try as many as twelve different activities – plus lots of other evening activities and special activities such as cookouts, council fires, etc. We strongly recommend that you take a swimming class if you are a beginner level swimmer.

4. How's the food?

Camp food is good food. You’ll get really hungry at camp because you’re always on the go. We serve a big breakfast with two courses: cereal plus a main course like scrambled eggs & toast or French toast or pancakes. Things you’ll have for lunch and dinner include pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, tacos, submarine sandwiches and grilled cheese sandwiches. On cookout nights and overnights you’ll get to cook your own food. You might have macaroni & cheese and hot dogs cooked on a stick, or you might have overnight tacos or try your hand at mess kit pizzas. Let us know what your favorite foods are so that we can try to put them on the menu.

5. Where will I live?

There are separate camps for girls and boys. You'll be living in a cabin and sleeping in bunk beds. You can choose either a top or bottom bunk. You'll have shelves and hanging space for all your stuff. The youngest campers (nine and under) have a bathroom in their cabin. Older campers will have to walk to a nearby bath house with sinks, flush toilets and showers. There are between 3-6 campers in each room and 6-16 campers in each cabin (fewer in the younger cabins, more in the older cabins).

6. What is kapers?

Kapers are the jobs you do each day with your cabin mates to keep your cabin clean and make it look great. (When you share a room with 4 or 5 other people things can get pretty messy!) You will be responsible for making your bed and putting away your stuff neatly. You will also be responsible for a different chore each day like sweeping the floor or cleaning the showers.

7. What's quiet hour?

Quiet hour is the time for reading the Christian Science Bible Lesson. Everyone in your cabin will read the lesson together. You will also choose a thought for the day to memorize and share with the rest of the camp at the daily assembly.

8. Can I be in the same cabin as my best friend?

Cabin assignments are based on age. If you and your friend are close in age, then you will probably be in the same cabin. If you are different ages then it might not work out. We'd be happy to consider your request.

9. What kind of clothes should I bring?

We've included a packing list to help you decide what to bring. Bring plenty of T-shirts and socks and several pairs of sneakers including at least one really beat up pair that you can get wet. Don't bring lots of new or expensive clothes. Bring your old grungy stuff so you don1t have to worry about your clothes when you are doing pottery or playing mud soccer. Some kids like to have one nice outfit to wear for the final banquet or the , but camp is one place where you never have to get dressed up if you don't want to. Even on Sundays no one gets dressed up because during Sunday School you'll probably go outside and sit on the ground.

10. Should I bring my musical instrument to camp?

If you play a musical instrument, we'd love to have you bring it to camp. Many campers play in front of an audience for the first time at camp. You can perform in the talent show and during our Sunday evening Vespers. Perform solo or with a friend or a group of cabin mates. If your parents are worried about sending an expensive instrument to camp ask them to talk to the director about it. If you play the piano bring your music because camp has lots of pianos where you can practice or perform.
