News - Session III, 2003

Welcome to Family Camp 2003! We have a fabulous group of families and individuals here for our week of outdoor, sports, waterfront, music, and art programs. It's going to be a fun-filled week!

August 9

There were many tears and smiles today as campers wished each other goodbye. As parents tore their children away from their cabins, friends were making pacts to keep in touch this year and reunite at camp in '04. Thank you to everyone who was a part of CLC 2003 - it was a fantastic summer! We can't wait to see you next year!

August 8

After a full day of packing and cleaning, Crystal Lake Camps staff and campers enjoyed a smashing finale to an incredible summer. The dining hall was decorated to the hilt with white christmas lights, tablecloths, floating candle centerpieces, and beautiful murals all around the building. The evening was filled with incredible talent, including a hilarious puppet show, a hula-hoop act, and many soul-filled dance routines. We wrapped up the evening with the CLC tradition of walking to the Lodge, lighting candles, and singing 'Symbol of Serenity' one last time together. It's been a great session and summer!

August 7

Today was absolutely beautiful here at CLC and our Trailblazers took advantage of the heat by floating down the Loyalsock River on rubber rafts and then going to Eder's, camp's favorite snack hut, for a large scoop of ice cream. (Cookie Dough was the ice cream flavor of choice although their latest ice cream concoction, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, ran a close second.) The warm weather was the perfect backdrop for our final council fire, which was enhanced by the many counselors who took part in the largest fire performance of the summer. Campers and staff were led back to their cabins in silence while those who successfully completed their Crimson Arrow stayed behind for their own private induction ceremony.

August 6

The Kayaking class took to the river this afternoon to experience the rapids of the Susquehanna River. They also enjoyed dinner out on the town and a testimony service at the Williamsport Church led by Crystal Lake Camps very own, Dottie Alford. Although they missed our picnic supper, their smiles and stories tell us they had a wonderful time.

August 5

The campers were welcomed back into camp after overnights with a terrific downpour...which just made the overnights even more memorable! After dinner we had a slide show presentation of photos from the summer, and later on we had an excellent presentation for older campers from The Longyear Museum on our textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Everyone is sleeping soundly tonight!

August 4

The sun was shining brightly as our campers departed for their overnight camping trips today. Dunwoody hiked down to Whipple Mill, Kiya stayed at Birch Springs Cabin, Atira camped out at Project Cabin, and Seneca did a hefty hike up to a nice spot on the LT trail. Wahalla went to World's End, Nikahu went to Rickett's Glen (a state park with wonderful waterfalls), and the trailblazers hiked from World's End back to camp (20 miles!) There was also a mountain biking overnight covering over 30 miles in the two days. It's quiet tonight at camp - time for the head staff to have a night off!

July 28

Today is the first day of regular scheduled activities ~ Woohoo! We have a number of new offerings this summer, including field hockey, water polo, Crimson Arrow, knitting, and Banquet Planning. It's a beautiful day and campers are getting excited about this evening's cookout suppers.

July 27

This morning was filled with wonderful sunday school classes, cabin photos, and'Standby Inspections' in both camps. In the afternoon, our activity fair wowed our campers with the many class offerings from which they could choose. We wrapped it up just in time to dash into the Dining Hall for games before a summer thunderstorm came through camp. Tonight was an incredibly moving and inspiring evening of music and poetry ~ our traditional Vespers program.

July 26

Session 3 has begun! We have 86 campers this session, including our 5 friends from Russia and 8 from Mexico. It was exciting to meet the many new faces that arrived today. We have our girls in Kiya, Atira, Wahalla, and Nikahu. Our boys are bunked in Dunwoody, Seneca, and Norman. We have an incredible group of kids here!
